WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB'S WINTER MEETING.

.':■, NOTES AND anticipations. [BY TELEGRAPH.— CORREaPOSDKST.] ~ - Wakgasci, Tuesday.

The weather promises to be fine for the Wanganui Jockey Club's Winter Meeting, which opera | on Thursday. Acceptances for the first dsv's ' races are exceedingly good and there is every prospect of the meeting .." being a great success from every point of view. • Waitarere has been doing good work < n the ■track and has come into the place of favourite for the Wanganui Steeplechase, especially as his stable mates have been withdrawn. He is likely to run well and hits built up a lot since he was last here. Ma hoe appears very fit and must be hard to beat in the May Hurdle Race. Irish is very well. The following ore my selections:— Borough Handicap Delamere or Intelligence. " Wanganui . Steeplechase: Irish, Nadador, ind Nestator. - ( Electric Hack Handicap: Kainku or Gauze. *May Hurdle Race: Black Reynard or Mahoe. Hack" Hurdle Race: Merriwai or Truth!jl. Connolly Handicap: Marguerite, King Billy, and Jiolus. * .... , . Hack Flat Handicap: Stavbov or Swimming Belt. '- - ;. :" ■ ' Century Hurdle Race (second day): Black Revnard, Mahoe, Aqua Regia.,^ .- ;"."■'- • TRAINING NOTES. £ST TELEGRAPH.— ASSOCIATION. WAXGAXti, Tuesday. Yesterday afternoon the Auckland-owned pair, Irish and Aqua Regia, were both jumped, the former going over the big fences and the latter the hurdles. . Both horses shaped particularly well: '■: : ''' . ' ..." , This.morning Mahoe and Bonheur were sent over the hurdles together. The former, who is very well, jumped pleasingly, appearing much too good ; for his companion. Dan Leno had Dear Dolly and Engraver as companions in a spin over five furlongs. The former had all the best of it. Nadador, Florio, and Creusot covered a mile and a-half together, the two former finishing a couple of lengths ahead of Creusot in 2m. 50js. Truthful and Aorangi jumped the hurdles, the former pleasing most. ~.; Irish and Aqua Regia covered two rounds at a solid pace, both moving freely. Lord Ullin jumped the big fences well, but Romany King's display was not a taking one. Kurawaka and St. Bill were companions over six furlongs, the latter finishing in front in lm. 19£s. Gauze and Swimming Belt covered the same distance fast, finishing abreast. Marguerite and Maui ran a mile in lm. 485., the latter having the best of it. Fawa and Waitarere covered two miles ; n 3m. 545, the latter appearing to finish the stronger at the end.- Rangitoto, Needlework, Regulation, King Billy, Nestator (who" is very fit), Recreation, Evenlode, Sedgemoor, Anemone, Kuku, Rahui, and Barley did serviceable tasks.. ."■■. ~.'., , ■ . ■ i INTERPROVINCTAL GOSSIP. [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] CANTERBURY. ~' Tuesday. The Government stallion Lupin got a good advertisement at Ashburton last week, when his son Lupulite. accounted for the two principal sprint races.; Lupulite: who is a half-brother, to Brighton—a decent performer on Southern, courses—is a very speedy gelding. The opposition this week was not very strong, but Lupulite won so decisively each day that I do not think there < is much doubt he is likely to distinguish himself in much higher company yet.; ~"-._■■ .;, r?»; ;-;:...■■, •; ■ . _.;.';, .-, ■:; Kremlin's brother, Czar Kolohbl, gave two moderate displays at Ashburton this week, but the fact that he was suffering from a cold may have been responsible for his 'failure. At any rate, I prefer to pay little. notice to his Ashburton efforts. • After many disappointments, Ivanoff was seen in attractive colours in the Grandstand Handicap, the principal ©vent on the second day of the Ashburton meeting. Entering the straight, Lapland appeared-to have the race in hand, but Ivanoff put in a great run, and smothered everything, winning very easily. Excepting one or two successes on the West Coast at Christmas .time,, this was Ivan'off's first win since he carried off the Welcome Stakes in the spring of last season. In the interval he must have cost followers of 'Hobbs' stable no end of money. '*'•'. .".'" WANGANUL . ■ ' Tuesday. . The grey gelding Tangitii is putting in some solid work here with a view to future jumping events. W. Rayner has the son of Adam, and Zeta in pretty good condition. ' :;'; ! ' '-. -■ . . ■ Rangitoto is on jhe improve, and I expect to see- the chestnut, who is a beautiful jumper, play a prominent part in his forthcoming leaping engagements. '.""■■' Lydia, a chestnut mare by 'King John, i shows,-a, good bit of-'pace over a ; short distance, and may be worth watching later on.: in. the season. . ■ '.;.',.~cv-; .■' ■ ■/:■:■ ■-~. -;;».. , Le Vent' is- acquitting, himself very well in his work,' but I doubt if the chestnut son of Sou'-wester will be able to do himself justice at the Wanganui Jockey Club's meeting.- , ■ "■■■■'-•','■-, : Frank Lincl. evidently does not intend to bustle Kuroki,: for the son of Fisko has been so far restricted to hill work. The I chestnut seems to have benefited by \the i new departure, and will shortly be . put : into active commission. V . I .■•■;'; Armistice, although looking well to'the eye, is a bit on the big side,' but should be seen to advantage before long, possibly . in the Connolly Handicap. Te Kainui jumps ! fairly well, , but I am doubtful about his; pace.V ;*v >, Anemone- is galloping well here,; and settled Armistice the' other morning " over amile. . ' • ; -■• - ■ "-. s . . ■ Tangitu, while being schooled, on Saturday,' morning, 5 turned turtle, but 1 the' rider, George Laing, luckily escaped with a shaking. '..- • Slow Tom is in good fettle, and > should play a>* prominent part in the decision of the Wanganjii Steeplechase. There is not a cleaner-legged horse on the' tracks than the St. Ives gelding. ■ ; ; J. B. Williamson's teamlrish, Engraver, and Aqua Regia—are ' all in good nick, - ; the last-named especially looking well in the coat. She should account for a race at the meeting. ■ * . The Sylvia Park—Emerald maro Erin Park will in future do duty between the shafts. ' .-' _ ': "' ' ' '•" .' _. , WELLINGTON. ".. •'*'.' .', ' . :...• ... Tuesday. It is not yet known who will fill McConnon's place at Porirua during his illness. A. Harper recently joined the stable, and may do the riding when the weights ~ : ; suit. R. McGregor arid T. Pritchard recently did some riding for the stable, and may bo given ; a chance. The stable, had a good team to start the jumping meetings, but the accident has somewhat upset the arrangements. Maui, Waitarere, and Pawa will probably represent tho stable in the jumping events at Wanganui. ■'."" .'.■,.."...:..,' ■.'.'■.:..■;•-.■'•.■•: NAPIER. - ~■■'.' ."■; ,■;'}{'; '.-J. ~ : : : ■:':■■/' Tuesday. . Prior to being sent to Wanganui, Nadador and Eclair got through, their schooling lessons at Hastings in very pleasing style, and consequently, may be expected to give a good account of themselves at Wanganui. ' .-'.•- ' THE PAKURANGA HOUNDS. TO THIS SPORTING EDITOR. ~ Sir, — your 'issue a few days ago " Harrier" takes me to task for misinforming the sporting public re the opening meet of the Pakuranga Hunt Club. Now, if " Harrier" will be good enough to look up my letter again of the 13th inst. he .will see that I said nothing about the opening meet, but distinctly mentioned the formal opening meet of the P.H.C., and I may further mention for " Harrier's" information that the same thing occurred last year, when several meets were held prior to'the formal opening, at which the usual and time-honoured hunt breakfast was given. " Harrier" »ays that a hunt breakfast is not considered absolutely necessary for a formal opening, and though.it may tend to fortify the nervous it is not conducive, to sport:. Anyone would think that " Harrier" was giving the hunt breakfast from the marked way in which he interests himself about it, and' though, of course, members of the Pakuranga Hunt Club could not be expected to ride as straight to-day as " Harrier" did 25 years ago, even with the addition of, a judicious quantity ,of jumping spirit, still "Harrier's" feelings must have become badly soured when he assumes that members. have not a soul above the solids and liquids provided at a hunt dinner. Is there no pleasure and joy in seeing kindred spirits and friends in the usual lime-honoured manner?—l am, etc., Correspondent. PAKTJRASGA Hunt CLUB, P.S.— may mention for " Harrier's" "information that these preliminary meets are exclusive of those given for exercising and conditioning > the hounds, which takes place prevous. to the aforementioned; -* ~
