SPORTING NOTES.

Tub fact of a large number of" candidates for honours in" the Great Northern Hurdle Race and Great Northern Steeplechase claiming engagements in the leading events set down for decision at the Wanganui Jockey Club's meeting on Thursday and Friday next will have the effect of throwing a deal of interest into the West Coast gathering. The Wanganui Steeplechase, which is the big event of the opening day's programme, has 13 horses engaged, the Auckland-owned Irish heading the list with lOst 131b. Advices to hand credit the Eton gelding with striding along in very bold style, and he has got . through his schooling work in a. most- satisfactory manner. All being well with Irish on Thursday, ho can apparently be safely ticked off to render a good account of himself. Auckland claims a second string to her bow in the shape of Nestator, and as the Nestor gelding will be making his debut as a cross-country horse, that in itself will invest the character of the chestnut's ! perfomance with a deal of. interest. The Century Hurdle Race, which figures on the second day's programme, has the strong field of 19 engaged, and it may, therefore, be assumed that the issue is well veiled in obscurity. The light-weight Mahce (9st 51b), who has been whispered about for somo time as a horse likely to put up a good record in the winter, is credited'with being very well, and if he is as good as represented be will prove a hard horse to defeat. Speculation on the double Great Northern Hurdle Race and Great Northern Steeplechase—continues fairly brisk. The two Nestators and Cuiragno and Nestator are the two shortest-priced , combinations. 40 to 1 being the quotation. . Straight-out on the Great Northern Hurdle Race 5 to 1 is offered on the field, Cuiragno being quoted favourite at that-figure. Nestator figures at a point; longer, 10 to .being obtainable about either Blactk Reynard, Cavalry, or Shrapnel. Khama, who won distinction in the first race he contested across country, was not amongst the entrants for the Takapuna Steeplechase. Singular to remark, however, ' while the Castor gelding was left out of that race, he was nominated for the Great Northern Steeplechase. When Waipuna and Ren Blair won the' Empire and Royal Handicaps at Takapuna last winter the dividend paid on the double event machine was £513 18s. This year, in ■ connection with the same raoes, the fortunate backers handled £797 17s. < While beind schooled at Ellerslie on Monday, Hardship cut one of his forelegs rather severely, and he will have to be treated to a rest. The stallion Freedom, who , had been at the stud in the Waikato for a number of "years past, died there recently. : The Pakuranga Hunt Club meet to-day at noon at the Scotch Church, Otahuhu.
