THE GOLDFIELDS.

WAIOTAHI.

Tub manager of the Waiotahi mine reports for the week as follows-No. 6 level .•Driving south on the footwall cross reef is in progress, and is in a distance of 35ft. The reef is about 15in in width, but so far it has hot shown any gold. The third stope on the)footwall dropper has been carried east from its junction with- the main reef for a -; distance of 66ft, and colours of gold have been seen in the quartz broken. Stoping on the main reef above obis level is in progress, the third stope being carried west of No. 1 winze for a distance of 78ft: A large amount of filling has. been put in this stope. Cure reef: The fourth, stope has been carried west of the rise for - a distance of 31ft. y Good dabs ; and colours of gold have been seen. The prospecting crosscut south of the main shaft is in a distance of 62ft. No. 5 ; level: Driving in the footwall on the cross reef is in' hand, and is in a distance of 25ft. - The reef here is still small and of - a clayey nature. Driving ) in on this will also prove \if there are any further droppers out of the main reef. ?■? Stoping. on the main reef above this level is in -progress as usual.* In the leading stope east of No. ,4 rise, or-immedi-ately over where gold was seen in driving, good ;dabs and colours of i gold have been seen. /■' The stopes east of No._ 2 winze are also producing a good quantity of crushing dirt. The seventh stope -has now been carried 35it east of No. I. winze.;: The same stope east from No. 1 rise to No.. 1 winze is now nearly: taken* out, and the eighth stope will be started about the latter end of this week. v Driving on the main reef v west of the main shaft/is in progress, and is in a distance of 217 ft., The reef is still, of large dimensions, and a little. better mineral is now making its appearance. ■ No. 4 level : Driving east on the main reef from the: north-east drive is in hand, the main footwall portion being about sft in width and, is in a distance pf 74ft. The rise.from here in the main reef is up, and it is evident we shall have to put up another rise further east in order to trace it up to No. 3 level. :i The stopes on the main reef above this level are still confined east of No. 1 winze, and colours of gold are occasionally seen in the quartz broken. Cure reef: The drive west from the'rise on this reef is in a distance of 19ft, the reef being about lOin in width. •/•*' The cutting down _of the roof .of the old No. 4 crosscut is. in progress. The - country . is, however, of a very hard nature. ;. No.; : 3 level: In the western end the excavating of a chamber for the purpose of sinking a winze is ■ still in hand, and the quarts broken shows some good mineral indications. WATCHMAN. Mr. J. W. Nichol, secretary of the.Watchman ! Gold Mining ; Company, received the following telegram from the mine manager yesterday:—" 2oz ldwt of melted gold from trial 'parcel value £6 ■ 75." ■ The parcel treated comprised a ton of quartz. —■»—■* WAITANGI. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Monday. :-, "The drive westward on the reef at \ the low; level has been driven a distance' of • 12ft from the crosscut, ; and as yet there. is no change in the quartz. The reef in the face is about*; 18in m thickness. ~ The manager is of the; opinion that the main reef is still further ahead ; in the l hangingwall of the lode 'being driven on, and he,;■' has decided to push on the main crosscut to decide tin's question. ' To enable this -being done more expeditiously work in the No. 2 level will be temporarily suspended.' ''At No. 2 level the crosscut : through the reef -is; now in a total . distance of 28ft, the last few feet having been driven through a sandstone formation with several small quartz leaders running V*lhrptigh it, .; 'hi ■ which, however, no gold has been seen. From the appearance of the face at -present, the proper footwall of the formation has been reached. Good progress has been made ..with ,the surface , lewl during 'She-week, ; and : 'the same good class of country still continues hi the face, which is within a. few feet: of where it is expected, to intersect the reef, and it may be met with now at any time. ■- WAIHI EXTENDED. [by telegraph.—own CORRESPONDENT.] ; ; s -Waihi, Monday. Good progress continues to be made with the crosscut '' at No. 4/level: in the Waihi Extended mine. With the : . object of intersecting the No.' 2 lode the course of the drive has been- slightly 1 altered to bring it in a more direct line with the No. 1 winze, and 3 the. present face is composed of mineral in a more J pronounced form than hitherto. Returns from •seven West Coast dredges totalled 2240z ldwt. , MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS. •Tairua ;. Broken Hillo (May 10): Stoping ■on the No. 1 reef has been continued with .very encouraging results. The reef in'the stopes is still looking very well' and the ore coming to hand is of a good payable character. / The rise on: the reef has been advanced about 10ft and the reef has now opened out to fully 3ft 6in in width and carries ore of a good payable quality. The main low level crosscut has been advanced about 20ft, making 120 ft. This i crosscut has now holed through to. the drive on the Punou reef. Reliance ■ (May 11) -Wo have sunk the shaft on the course of No. 2 reef a further depth of 9ft. 6in; total depth, 22ft 6in. The reef has become very low grade. ; For the last • 6ft or 7ft of sinking there has been little or no gold worth mentioning in the atone and have put it all over the tip. We have, some six or seven loads of quart/ on hand which-should go fairly well when treated. , > Kuranui (May 11) At the intermediate level, No. 1 stope on the footwall leader has been extended 18ft east of the rise and 16ft west. We ; have driven No. 2 stope east of the rise a distance of 6ft for the week. The leader varies in width from 2in to 6in and in the east end colours and dabs of gold have been seen in the mineralised stone pretty freely when breaking down.: West of . the rise the leader has. been rather disturbed by two breaks crossing it, and although it does not show gold so freely as the east end it carries some favourable minerals and should; crush all right. Tho drive oh'the Shotover leader has been , extended ? 4ft rin very tight country. During the week a small break was met with, causing the reef ito split into two parts, the hangingwall portion 'being about 4in. So far we have been able to take the : two parts with one drive, but they are getting farther opart.' Operations have been suspended on the Teutonic west crosscut, the country .reached being very poor. A small trial parcel from the Shotover : leader and some ore from the footwall leader are being put through the battery. .

Trafalgar (May 11) The winze on the Nelson reef has been sunk lOffc : for the week;'total distance, 20ft. below the floor of the level. The reef averages about '■ 18in, the quartz being well . mineralised and prospects fairly well in the dish. The crosscut to , intersect the Nelson reef at a ' lower level is in. 15ft. The country being passed. through is of a favourable nature for, gold-bearing reefs. In order to expedite, the low level,we will temporarily• suspend operations in trie winze and work shifts in the low level. .; With i a continuance of the same class, of country as now showing in the face the Nelson reef should •soon be in hand. Extended (May 11): Th» crosscut drive . has • been advanced 10ft, ; but • there is . no change to report. - One' man has been engaged uncovering the outcrop of the main reef:on the west side of ■ the gully, and at this point the reef is full 20ft thick and* composed of quartz of a very" kindly . description, especially the hangingwall portion. . • Golden Belt (Mav 10): During the week the Mopes worked under No."-2 level have yielded a fair amount of crushing dirt. In the low level the drive north from the pass has been extended 10ft, and this has now. functioned with the branch "reef driven on in the main level. The drive north from ' the • main crosscut has been extended 7ft, the? reef at present being small, but has every, appearance of openings out again as the ; drive advances. New, Dart (May . 11): The work, of laying the road into No. 2 level has been extended about 500 ft • from . the ■ aft. ~ ■ The guides have been placed in position in one. compartment, : and both should be finished: by the middle of the present week. Fair progress is being made with .the erection of the shaft. Waitangi (May 11): A" distance of 12ffc has been driven west on the reef from the main crosscut. The reef has narrowed down from:,; 4ft on the crosscut to 18in. . the hard flinty quartz on ; the

footwall side having almost end out. Two uraall cross leaders were cut- coming in- from the Sootwall arid : junctioning; with the,-reef,:tout■«'!«. no gold .-, has 'been seen. A commencement will be made during ; the coming week to extend wis main crawcut for the purpose of cutting the mam ' reef at present being Worked at No. 2'level, ycnxai is about 120 ft further ahead.
