THE BUTTER TRADE.

QUANTITIES - IN STORE. . THE SEASON'S RECORD. Now that the dairying season in Auckland is closing, after one of the most successful runs in the history of the industry in Auckland, it is interesting to refer back,to Mr. J. ■A. Kinsella's advice to farmers to go in for ensilage and winter dairying in Auckland. The quantities of butter coming through to cool store right up to the end of last month go to show that by the farmers going in for winter dairying the local butter markets would be on, a sure foundation. This year; there is a very great : quantity held in store,; and the result was shown by the drop in prices locally. .'

. If the quantity held id store on March" 31 had been shipped, would have given the dairying community better prices for butter for the next three months locally;; as it is, there is a downward tendency, owing to the quantity held in store, and so favourable has-been the season that there are still quantities coming forward. With an easy and regular winter supply ; there would be no holding in : store for months prior to the close of; the ordinary season. This year dealers have lost fairly heavily,?, they may be looked to next year to see that the loss is not on their side. The Home shipments have now ceased, and with the Southern markets fairly well supplied there 'must be a large. quantify of the butter'- now held. shipped. Home 'for.' the : opening -of next sea- j

Including the stored butter up to the end of March, when the year closed, arid the exports up to the same date, the year's make of butter totalled 4059 tons, an increase of over 1300 tons on the previous year's Jotal. Had the exports continued up till the present time, and winter dairying been in vogue, it would have meant; a great deal of difference, easing , the . storage quantities and keeping the local markets supplied with the new butter. However, the prospects for next season are , bright, and,the dairying community is looking forward with confidence to a big year.

Now that the tide of, settlement has. set in steadily, and lands are being opened up on every hand, the dairying industry should never look back, and exports of butter should ( increase -very largely still. ■: A thousand tons increase, such as this season has recorded over last; seasonj may not be attained nest season over this now \ closing season, but still substantial increase l can confidently be looked for.
