MEETINGS OF RATEPAYERS.

MANUBEWA. THE annual meeting of ratepayers of the Manurewa district was held on Monday last. Mr. Jas. Martin presided. The balance-sheet showed the total receipts to be £305 15s lOd. leaving: a : balance in hand after meeting all liabilities. The necessity of telephonic com.munication was brought forward, and it was decided to again apply for trucking yards at Manurewa railway; station. Considerable discussion took - place respecting the bad state of the Great South Road, and it was considered that a Government grant should be obtained, as the funds at the disposal of the two Boards interested are not sufficient to put the road in repair. . TAUPIEI. ON Tuesday, 7th inst., a social was given in the hall, in order to raise funds lor the establishment of a Girls' Hockey Club. The school children contributed , the whole of the items, and acquitted themselves with 4 credit. The programme consisted of school : part songs, drill to music, dialogues, and. pianoforte duets. The drill was particularly well received. The precision with which the children moved reflected > great credit on . Miss Crowe, who . trained them. After tlier children's ' part of the performance had bean gone through, dancing was continued, till midnight, the necessary ■ music being supplied by Mr. and Mrs. Jas. T. G. The local race meeting, which is to bo held on May 24, promises to be a success; Nominations to the number of 34 have been received for six events, and a large contingent of visitors is expected from Waikato. The season continues mild, and grass is plentiful in consequence Rarely at this season , has the stock been seen looking so well, and farmers are anticipating a good winter. . The member for the district has been advised by the Acting-Postmaster-General that an amount will be placed on the Estimates next session for a new . post office at Te Kuiti. The present postal accommodation is very primitive, the business being conducted in the railway station. This building will shortly be required for the stationmaster,. and it is imperative that a post office bo provided without delay. Improvements are still being made'in the township.
