THF DUTY ON TIMBER.
Sir,—l read with interest the report m your issue ,of the 2nd insfc. of a deputation to the Hon. G. . Fowlds, requesting the removal of tho duty on timber. Had the members of the deputation confined themselves to asking for the removal of the duty on hardwoods, .'a class of timber not indigenous to this colony, their request would have been more reasonable.' 'No doubt the duty enables the -local millers ,to keep up the price of timber, but while so many legislators! arc heavily interested in the timber trade I fear that, however beneficial the removal of the duty would bo to tho general public, there is no chance of it being abolished. 12.
