THE AUCKLAND POST OFFICE.
Sir, You recently voiced in your correspondence column a complaint regarding tLc ventilation of tho box lobby at the General Post Oi„vC. r There was aroplo ground for this oomplaint, but to my mind a m>Mo ■ serious matter requires urgent attention. I refer to the inquiry office at the end of tho box lobby, wncro one frequently ties three or four men working in ah atmosphere which cannot but be most injurious to health, the ventilation being entirely inadequate, and the odours from the mailroom and. tho cellar having- apparency no opportunity .to escape. Our post office officials are doing very responsible work, and serve the public with great r:aro and courtesy. I, with many others, consi ler that more attention should be given to enable them to work under healthful conditions. P.O. Box. May 9. Sir,—lt is high time tho Auckland public should make a strong protest to the Government against the treatment meted out to some of our post office officials. At tho end of tho stuffy, ill-ventilated, oac.lvlighted passage which box-holders are obliged to use, is a room about tho size of a j,ood rabbit-hutch, with pratically no ventilation, and absolutely no natural light. In tbis den twe or three officials are obliged to spend their time,'working amid conditions which are simply atrocious. It is a peculiar fact that the Government, which las c'olo such good work in compelling employers to supply to their workers sanitary, well lighted, well-ventilated workrooms, should themselves be the most flagrant offenders. It is positively cruel to compel men to, work under such conditions as 1 have r.'tntioned, and tho unavoidable consequence on the staff will be impaired health. I . trust that someone with more influence than I possess, and an abler pen than mine.-vill take this matter tip and bring to an end what 1 is nothing short of a scandal. May 10. Jas. C. Entrican.
