v [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] 1 . Thames, Friday. <* The fortnightly meeting of tho Thames Borough Council was held last evening, tho Mayor (Mr. A. Burns) presiding. Dr. Purdie, district health officer, gave a lengthy report of his inspection of the borough, in which ,he stated that ho was' pleased to notice the i great improvement made in the general drainage system by the construction of open concrete water-tables, which he decidedly approved of,'from a sanitary point ■of view. ,' ■ ' The secretary of the Education Board wrote protesting against the proposed new concrete water-table ' along the frontage of the Kauaeranga school grounds in Baileystreet. He pointed l out that as this was an alteration to the permanent levels, and would entail considerable expense in raising the drains through the school grounds to connect with the water-table, the Board would look to the Council to bear, tho cost incurred by this work. The. Mayor explained that on tho receipt of this letter he had instructed the contractor not to go on with the work. The Board had been notified to that effect, and at the same time they had been informed that as the present open ditch running along the. frontage of the school as insanitary for drainage purposes, they must make such fresh arrangements for the drainage of the school : grounds as would be approved by the inspector. ..; The monthly returns of gold purchases by the local banks were ' read as follows: — Bank of New Zealand: From, mines within the borough, 32260z; from the county, 3980z ldwt. Bank of New South Wales: I. Borough, 31oz 9dwt; county, 8320z 16dwfc. Miller and Sons wrote on behalf of the. proprietor of the Old Cardigan special claim, asking for permission to mine beneath the streets and roads of the borough. This was granted. ■ , _ The resignation of Mi". J. W. IPoulgrain as, the Council's representative on the High School Board was accepted, and Mr. F. H. : Claxton was elected ,to fill the-vacancy. ! Minister for Mines respecting the Government subsidy for the proposed scheme of the New May L Queen Gold Mining Company, in which it was proposed to sink the Queen of Beauty shaft to a:depth-of 1050 ft. He stated that, as representing the Borough Council on this deputation, he had promised, on behalf of the Council, the subsidy of £1000 towards this work, which had been previously promised by the Council for assistance; in connection with m-ospeoting the deep levels. ■ Tenders for the supply "of ,1000 yds of road metal were opened and dealt .with as follows:— Hawkes, 8s ■9d ner yard C.
