ALLEGED THEFT OF FISH. , At the Police Court yesterday, before Messrs. J. S. Dickson and E. G. Ford, J.P.'s, a young man named William Henry Cresswell was charged with stealing 20 tins of herrings, valued at 20s, the property of the Huddart Parker Steamship Co. <■ ■■■- ■;.. - ■ - Mr. J. E.Lundon, who appeared for accused, applied for a remand until Wednesday next, which was granted. Bail was allowed. ■ ' , ' "THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT." John Winter, a cabdriver, for whom Mr J. R. Lundon appeared, pleaded not guilty to being drunk while in charge of a cab and horses in Khyber Pass Road on Wednesday night. Sergeant F..A. Moore said (hat he was positive that defendant was drunk, and incapable of looking after a cab and hones. Constables Keep and Finlayson also evidence. Mr. Lundon said that the defendant was not in charge of the cab, but seeing that it was unattended, he told the police that he was in charge in order to shield the driver. , • The Bench said that they would give defendant the benefit of the doubt, and fined him 20s and costs for drunkenness only. MISCELLANEOUS. For allowing his horse to wander at large at Northcote'Thomas Jackson Nicholls was fined ss, and costs 7s. . ' ', ' . A boy named Henry Akast was fined ss, and costs 7s, for riding an unlighted bicycle along Manukau Road after dark. For committing indecent acts in the public streets Charles Porter and Patrick Brady, both young men, were convicted and discharged On paying costs. Francis Harrington and David Morgan were each fined 10s, and costs, or in default 24 hours' imprisonment, for drunkenness, and a first offender was convicted and discharged on paying cab hire (ss). Three -.mall boys pleaded guilty, before Mr. R. W. Dyer, S.M., to stealing a dingey, oars, and rowlocks, valued at £8. They also pleaded guilty to stealing three pairs of boots. It was explained that the' boys took the boat from Freeman's Bay,; where it had been hauled up on the foreshore, and rowed over to Devonport. They stole the boots from three different shop doors in Parnell. Two of the defendants were committed to the Boys' Training Farm .it Levin, and the. other was committed to St. Mary's Industrial School. f
