A SOUTH AFRICAN TREK,
11,000 NATIVES PERISH.

Capetown, May 8. It is reported from German SouthWest Africa that 11,000 Hercros out of 15,000 who were trekking towards Lake Ngami have perished. •. '%
The Heroros are a fighting race of Gor- '. man South-West Africa. In 1904 they rebelled against German rule, and in the fight- . tag that ensued it was estimated that the. Hereros in the northern part* of th» ter- • ritory had been exterminated. There wa* at that time- a great trek of Horeros. an<i hundreds of .them perished in the desert . from lack of water. Their bodies were scattered about a groat and deep hole they had dug with crude implement* in a last dosperate effort to find water. Lake Ngami. to-: wards which they were, trekking, is in Mat*belcland, about 70 miles over the border.
