Rhatigan, who died itf ; the residence of her niece, Miss Turner a ii • Kelburne, on Monday, in her 80th year' was well known in Wellington. The dc* ceased lady was . the eldest daughter of Captain T. Paul, of the 65th Regiment ("Royal Tigers"), and spent her girlhood iii the West Indies, Canada, and Te ne . zuela, where her father was stationed. Oo the: outbreak of the Maori war Captain Paul was sent out to New Zealand, he «md his family being brought to the colon? "- from- Sydney in H.M'.s. Inflexible in. 1816; In. 1847 they came on to Wellington, aod in the following year Miss Paul was married to Captain Rhatigan. She and her husband lived for some time in a fortified pa at Pahautanut, built bt Colonel Russclf of the 58th Regiment (father of Sir Wnt' Russell), who was engaged in forming th» road into Wellington. Dr. Wait arrived at Port Chalmers in 1863, and settled at- Oamaru, where for many years ho practised his pro- •". fession. He was a prominent Freemason and founder of Lodge. Waitaki.. During the ■ course of his long residence he held many public positions, including that -of Mayor (two years), chairman of the Harbour Board (two years), and chairman of -' the Rakanui Road Board. He laid the foundation-stono of the first jetty, in Oamaru, and turned the first sod of th<j Waitaki-Moeraki railway. Ho had been ailing for some time. *
