At the inquest on the body of Arthur E'iby, the young man who was found dead in bed at Barrett's Hotel, with a revolver by him, •with <one chamber discharged, ,* verdict of sucide whilst of unsound mind was returned. . ' . At to-day's meeting of the trustees of the Benevolent "Institution it was decided to wait on the Hon. G. Fowlds on his return to Dunedin at the end of the; werk in reference to getting assistance in transporting the old and needy Chinese of the colony back' to China. ' „ \^ r .. , \:. Mr. J. M. Gallaway raised the question of the need in. Dunedin of a hospital for incurables. It was, he said, a question of the greatest urgency. . He complained that the Benevolent Home was gradually, being diverted from its proper purpose to accommodating incurable cases. Finally it was agreed to set apart a day for a special meeting to discuss this and other questions. . " : The . sweated industries exhibit closed to-day. It has been seen by - over 14,000 people in Dunedin, and goes to Invercargill to-morrow. : At to-night's meeting of the City Council the. Dunedin Suburban Gas Company asked the Council's favourable consideration of a private Bill to be introduced defining its position and giving the city or any borough the right to purchase at any time on giving six months' notice, the price to be fixed by arbitration if not by. agreement. Several- councillors expressed strong disapproval of any proposal to purchase, and the matter was referred to a commit/tee- to consider and report. -, - ' Chbistchuech, Wednesday. The New Brighton Borough Council last night refused an application by a cycling arid. ;■ motor, club for, permission to hold motor-car and cycle races on the beach. At a meeting of the local A. and P. Association this afternoon the Sheep Committee recommended that the following resolution be forwarded on to the Agricultural Conference for discussiont—" (1) That it is desirable that the Government should revise the system of branding and l ear-mark-ing of sheep; (2) that the Government be asked to abolish the sheep tax." . The recommendations were approved of. Wellington*, Wednesday. An' emu, which was recently placed in the Zoological Gardens at' Newtown Park, has been wantonly done to death, the bird having been found dead with wounds, evidently inflicted by a. stick or a stone.
