Melbourne, April 5. Thk British Consul-General at San Francisco, in a letter to the Government, ."ays : —" From a workman's point of view the situation here is deplorable. The unions have seized San Francisco in a. relentless grip, and are •■(•fusing to allow any new members to join the unions, with the object of limiting I lie supply of men and forcing up the pi ices of labour. The cost of living i;< so high that a man earning live dollars ,i day. it married, can only manage to keep his head above water.''
