WAIHI SCHOOL OF MINES.

[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Waihi, Saturday. The annual mooting of the Waihi School of Mines was held last night. The report showed that from both the financial and educational points of view tlio school was now in a hotter position than at the last annual meeting-, and that a greater interest is being taken in the institution by the young men of Waihi. the number of registered students and the class attendance having largely increased. Tho average of registered students for the year 1905 numbered 65, with a class attendance of 171. With the exception of tho year 1903, when tho attendance averaged 68, this is the highest record of the school, and coinnares very favourably with both the years" 1904- and 1905, which had respectively an average of 53 and 56, and a class attendance oi 113 and 117. At the annual examinations held last December, 25 students sat, gaining 33 first-class certificates 22 second-class, and eight third-class, and obtaining 11 first places in the colony. An application had been made to the Mines Department for a special grant for a workshop for the electrical classes, but no satisfactory discussion had yet. been received. The council had not been able to make any change in the issue of certificates or get this matter placed on a better footing. Further changes had taiken place in the electrical classes during the year. In Juno, Mr. Lancaster resigned, and was succeeded by Mr. Fairfield. As the, work in connection with these classes in this school was increased immensely and tho time at the disposal of the instructor was limited owing to his other duties at the Thames and Karangahakc, an application had been made to the Mines Department for a separate instructor for this district. The total receipts for the year amounted to £931 18s, including a sum of £607 4s paid by the Government in subsidies, and a donation of £150 from the Waihi borough. Tho total expenditure w.i- £773, including a. grant of £25 to the Waikino School, and an expenditure of £510 on furniture, gas-fittin-s, and repairs, leaving a balance'" to credit of £158 16s 7d. A liability, however, of about £80 had been incurred in alterations and additions to the buildings, and this credit balance will now lie reduced to about £70: but a further sum is now due from the Mines Department. At a mooting of students. Mr. T. (Jilmour was re-elected president. The other officers were also reelected.
