THE PURSUIT OF RAISULI.
BATTLE IN THE MOUNTAINS
DEFEAT OF THE. SULTAN'S
TROOPS.
By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Cop^'iyht.
Morocco, January 28. The Sultan of Morocco's troops that were sent in pursuit of Raisuli, the ox-Governor of Tangier, have attacked the tribes in the mountains that, are harbouring him.
The troops were repulsed from the position they attacked, and retreated in a demoralised condition.
They had 50 men killed and many wounded.
When Raisuli fled from Tangier in December troops were .sent after him. Ho awaited attack in a fortified position, but finally was shelled out of it. He and his men then fled to the. mountains, but found time on the way to rob messengers who were carrying tribal presents to the new Governor of Tangier, and to rob the Fez mail. It was next reported that Raisuli had been captured by a mountain Tribe and that the chief was seeking: to make terms for ransom. Apparently those negotiations have failed, and the Sultan intends to fight it out.
