WAIHI NEWS.

[BY TELEGRAPH. OWN coi!Ri:seoN-ni'..\T.]

Waihi, Monday. Mr. J. Devlin the Irish envoy, arrived by train this evening, and was welcomed by the Reception Committee. He is to give an address at the Academy of Music, and a very large gathering is expected. An application affecting the water supply of Waihi came on for hearing at the "Warden's Court to-day. Application was made by the Waihi Gold Mining Company for a timber warrant over an area of 22 acres, within the 950 acres set asftlo, though not yet actually reserved, as the Waihi Borough Council water conservation area. The application was opposed by the Borough Council, represented by Mr. Jackson, whilst. Mr. 11. P. Harry, superintendent of the Waihi Company, appeared in support. Mr. Jackson based the grounds of objection on the fact that timber cutting on the area in question would be the means of contaminating the water, besides denuding the bush of timber. Mr. D. W. McArthur, liorough engineer, gave evidence supporting counsel's condition. Mr. Barry stated that the company were also anxious to preserve the purity of the wafer supply, and had assisted the borough by giving two sluice heads of water instead of the one they were legally bound to supply. The company did not desire to do anything unfair, and he contended that all they wanted off the bush was the mining timber, which was but a very small proportion. Tin* Warden said lie could not. deal with the application just yet. as he was waiting to see how the borough water scheme was going to work out. He did not intend them to have 950 acres taken out: of the goldfields if a smaller area would do, as a portion of the area in question might prove auriferous, and it would then be better if the boroueh looked elsewhere for its water supply. The application was accordingly allowed to stand in abeyance.
