With the object of founding a professorship of home economics or domestic science en the plan extensively in vogue in the United States of America, Mr. John Studholme, of Coldstream, has offered to contribute for three yearn a sum of £200 per annum towards the salary of the professor, provided that M'iss Gilchrist, of Tennessee University, is appointed. Mr. Studholme has placed his offer before the Minister for Education and the governors of the Canterbury College. Commenting on this offer, the Guardian says:—"Were the country to establish a chair of home economics or domestic science, its occupant would be able not only to organise long courses for university students leading to a degree, but shorter courses for students and others not desirous of going as fur as a degree in domestic science, and also classes for teachers at normal schools, and lectures to women in the various centres of population. At meetings of the University Senate and Canterbury College Board of Governors today letters were received from Mr. John Studholme, of Coldstream, urging the establishment of a chair in home economics at the Canterbury College, or, in default, at the Victoria College. Mr. Studholme stated that he would be willing to contribute £200 annually for three years towards the upkeep of a chair. The 'letters ware referred to committees to report.
