JAPANESE WAR PREPARATIONS.
GETTING READY TO ME»t RUSSIA.
THE EXPLOITING OF MANCHURIA. By Telegraph. —Press Association.—Copyright, (Received January 28. 11.36 p.m.) Brishank. .January 28. Mr. McGi.kw, who is the representative of a firm in China, ami who has resided at Kobe for 25 years, lias arrived here on a. visit. He says the Japanese intend to exploit Corea and Manchuria, and that large numbers of the worst class of Japanese are making their way thither. The consequence was that the Chinese were, beginning to regard the Japanese <+ .lerally with disfavour. The Japanese already had got as far north in Manchuria as Harbin, and were still working up. In Corea they were in bad odour with the natives, whom they were treating most unjustly in taking ; their lands and giving inadequate compenI satiou.
At the present time there was no possibility of Australia doing anything in the meat trade, as the Japanese preferred the native article, and would not even look at mutton.
The general belief in Japan, he says, ap-
pea-red to bo that the country would ben
fore many years be. again at war with Huh* sia, and preparations were being made ac-. cordingly. An enormous military depot, covering 250 acres, was in course of construction at Nagvya, between Kobe find Yokohama, ami every arsenal in the count try was working at high pressure turning (Kit arms and ammunition. Indeed so great? were the preparations that a stranger would imagine the country was actually en-* gaged in war.
Reverting to Manchnrian affairs Mr. Men Glew said the higher class of Japanese regretted the influx into Manchuria of untiesirable classes, and hoped that very soon it would be checked by the Government.
