PREMIER AND THE CHURCH.

Madrid, January 27. Senor Maura, the new Spanish Premier, it is reported, has decided to treat the Church and the Vatican with deference.

The accession to office of Senor Maura means thai the Liberal.', though in a. majority, liave had to give way to the Conservative Opposition, owing to dissensions in their own ranks. After the general election in September, 1905, the Ministerial party numbered 210, and the Oppositionists 167. The Liberals, however, are broken into three groups, led respectively by Senor Pios, Senor Moret. and Senor Canalejos. Since September, 1905 there have been about half-a-dozen changes of Ministry, owing to disagreements over the new laws for controlling religions associations.
