A BARQUE CAPSIZES.

WAI-ITI CARRIED ON TO A BANK.

VESSEL HALF SUBMERGED

LIKELY TO BECOME TOTAL WRECK.

far TET.EfJKAVH. —OWN" CORRESPONDENT.]

Dakiuvu.i.e, Monday. A SERIOUS mishap occurred to the barque Wai-iti (Captain Cormack) this afternoon. About eight o'clock this morning, when the barque was- leaving the wharf at Mangawhare for Hoanga to load timber for Melbourne, a strong north-east wind was blowing, and the vessel was carried on to a bank immediately below the wharf. With the rising tide efforts were made to float the Wai-iti, but proved fruitless. As the tide fell she. listed outward, and at half-past three turned over. The masts snapped off close to the deck, and the vessel is now lying on her side, half submerged 1 .

Information received in town last night was to the effect that the barque had turned completely over, and would probably become a total loss.

The Wai-iti is an iron vessel of 689 tons register, and was built in Norway, being formerly known as. the Signe. She was employed in the intercolonial trade for some time, under the Norwegian flag, and was purchased last year by Mr. Turnbull, of Timaru. The vessel arrived at Kaipara from Lyttelton about a fortnight ago, and had discharged bet cargo and ballast in readrness to load her timber cargo. It is believed that the vessel is insured in the Alliance Insurance Company.
