DEFEAT OF THE SOCIALISTS
GREAT LOYAL DEMONSTRATIONS. By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright. (Received January 27. 4.51 p.m.) "Berlin. January 26. The returns to hand of the polling on Friday in the general election for the Reichstag indicate that the Socialists have suffered a severe reverse.
The announcement of the first results made at Berlin at midnight was received with a tremendous loyal demonstration.
Cheers were called for the Kaiser and were given with uproarious vigour.
The crowds desired to proceed to the Royal Palace to cheer the Kaiser there, but this was prevented by the police.
The people, however, gathered at the residence of the Imperial Chancellor (Prince Bulow) and cheered him.
. Prince Bulow assured the crowd that the Government was confident the elections would overthrow all barriers to the nation's welfare and greatness
At noon on Saturday the results n 281 of the 397 elections were mown. Of these the figures in 164 constituencies were final, and in 117 a second ballot is necessary.
The Socialists have been heavily defeated at Leipsic and Magdeburg. in Saxony.
