DEATH BY VIOLENCE.
HANDCART MAN BRUTALLY ASSAULTED.
AN AUSTRIAN ARRESTED.
An" Austrian named George Recar whs arrested mi Saturday night, on a. charge of assaulting a handcart man named Michael Rice, on Wednesday last, so as to cause him actual bodily harm. It in. however. possible that the charge may be altered to a more serious one. as Rice, who was an elderly man, succumbed to his injuries. Deceased, it seems, was on his way to his home in Albert-street on Wednesday evening, when, it is alleged, he was for some reason or other, so far unexplained, struck on the chest by one of a number of Austrians and felled to the ground.
Rice was picked up by a constable in a semi-conscious condition, bleeding from the. face and hands, and taken to his home. The name of the accused, who is said to have been identified as the man who struck Rice, was taken. Rice on the following day developed serious symptoms, with the result that a doctor was called in ami ordered the man's removal to the hospital. As Rice became worse'his depositions were taken yesterday before Messrs. L. J. Bagnail and P. M. Mackay, justices of the peace, accused being present. In reply to accused deceased stated that he did not use insulting language towards the Austrians. An inquest on the body of deceased will be opened this afternoon.
