ANNIVERSARY DAY.
To-morrow the people of Auckland will celebrate the 67th anniversary of the foundation of the colony by observing a holiday. The banks, Stock Exchange, and the principal warehouses will be closed for the day.
The principal event will be the Anniversary Regatta, which promises to be as
successful as any function of the kind held
during the past few years. The entries for the various sailing and rowing events (comprising 2i races), are satisfactory, and some good contests are anticipated. In the sailing races, the event for trading vessels will probably be the main attraction, as it is expected that with the post putries there will be 10 vessels engaged in the rate. In the gig rates interest will be centred in the event fir the country clubs, which lias been specially placed on the programme this year, to encourage outside clubs to compete in the Anniversary Regatta. Another pleasing event will be the opening of the drive to the top of One-tree Hill, by Sir John Logan Campbell, the donor of this magnificent Cornwall Park to the people of New Zealand. The Takapuna Jockey Club's race meeting will be continued, and a number of water excursions to various seaside resorts are announced by the Devonport Steam Ferry Company. The bowling greens of the Auckland and other clubs will be open for play throughout the day.
