He had a very busy day on Saturday, visiting numerous mining centres. He was most cordially received everywhere. The receptions culminated at Kumara, whore a great gathering received His Excellency, the function being the largest and most enthusiastic of the tour. Yesterday the party drove to Otira. and to-day the journey to Christehureh will be completed. His Excellency is delighted with the success of his West Coast tour, which throughout has been marked with great enthusiasm. The Governor also greatly enjoyed tTie scenic wonders (if the coast. He had magnificent weather throughout the tour, bright sunny days everywhere. He purposes returning later to make a special trip to South West land and see the Franz Joseph glacier and other sights in the Southern district.

VISIT TO CHATHAM ISLANDS. [IIY TKt.KOR Al'll. OWN* COURKSt'ON'iMJ.VT.] Ciißisrctrußcrr, Monday. The Hon. M'r. Fowlds arrived in Christchurch from the West Coast on Saturday evening. He went across to meet the Governors party, then visiting Westland, and stayed with it for some time.

Speaking to a Times reporter lie said that the trip had been a marked success, and was altogether a most delightful one. Never within the memory of the proverbial oldest inhabitant had there been such a spell of beautifully line weather as the coast had lately been enjoying. Mr. Fowlds joined the party at Reefton. and travelled to Hokitika with it. At Reefton they visited the Consolidated Mining Company's property, where the elaborate stamping machinery wits ins|H'cted with interest. They also paid a visit to the State coal mines and to Point Elizabeth. which was inspected with a view to assessing its possibilities as an Impel ial coaling station. The party took a special interest in the locality, where the people, of the coast desire to have a harbour built, starting with tie- bay at Point Elizabetli as its base, and working out from the jutting point- from Hokitika. They were taken to Lake Katiieri, and crossed in an oil launch to see the Dorothv Falls.

Mr. Fowlds left His Excellency at Hoki tika, and returned to Christ-church.

In reference to the projected visit of His Excellency to the Chatham Islands and others outlying. Mr. Fowlds said that the date for the trip, originally fixed for Thursday. had had to be postponed to a date as not yet definitely fixed. This \Vas because the Tutanekai had been suddenly called into requisition to repair the broken cable between the North and the South Islands, and was now at work on the repair?. It was probable, lie said, that the commencement of the trip would I*' later by three or four days than was originally intended.
