Gisbornk. Mo day. At the Police Court on Saturday a l lan was fined 2s 6d, and costs 12s 6d. for crielty to animals. lie buried several voting puppies in the sand, thinking this would be a more expeditious way of killing them than drowning.
Several important telegraph and telephone •extensions are in progress in this district to meet t.he rapid expansion of business.
The Poverty Bay Farmers' Union executive deplore the lack of interest displayed by farmers m the union, and the difliculty in getting in subscriptions.
Dr. I'omnre, medical inspector of the. native race, arrived overland from Wairoa by the coach on Friday afternoon. The doctor inspected the native settlement, at Nuluika, where an outbreak of typhoid recently occurred and moulted in four deaths. The outbreak is attributed' to a bad well, but. tin; other patients are now convalescent. Dr. I'omare will probably return to Wellington on Wednesday.

At a meeting of the legal profession it was decided to form a law .society in (lis borne. Mr. .1. W. .1. Nolan was -elected president, Mr. DeT.auiour vice-president, and Clirisp, W. D. Lvsnar, A. W. Roe«, Stock, and Blair members of the committee for the ensiling year. A smart and intelligent-looking young man of German birth, answering to the name of Frank von Lublie, appeared at- the Magistrate's Court this morning to answer three charges, the most, serious being a charge laid upon the information of 11. I'. Good by, of fraudulently converting to his own use whilst: employed as secretary and treasurer of the Tolago Bay Young Men's Club the sum of £8 15s, belonging to the said club. Accused was remanded until to-morrow. The hearing of further charges of theft were also adjourned. The accused, who was arrested on the steamer at Auckland, had booked his passage through Cook's local agency for his return to Germany. He had beeji on ti.e coast several months, and is understood to have come in for a. substantial sum of money recently.
