DEVONPORT YACHT CLUB..

Thk Devonport Yacht Club's second cruising race of the season was held on Saturday afternoon, tie' destination being Kawau Island. A motor launch race was. also held to the -auie place. The wind was southerly and blew fre-h throughout the afternoon. The entries and handicaps were: Ariki, scratch: Thelma. 3m. ; Rainbow, 3i»n. ; Moana, 16m.; Ida, 24m.; Aorere, 30m.: Xgatira, 36m.; Ladye Wilma, 37m. : Rangatira, 55m.; Mahaki, 47m.: Freda, 45m.; Tiro. 55m.: Iris, 65m. ; Mavourneen, 85m. The officers of the day were Messrs. J. H. Frater, S.ott, Colville, and W. 15. Alexander, and Messrs. Seagar Brothels ■oiirteoii-lv placed their launch Rehutai at, the dub's disposal as flag-hip. The yachts were sent away at a-quartor io three p.m. sharp. Ida, Iris. Thelma, and Mahaki crossed a.- the gun tired, the others being close up. except Ngatira, which was 2m. late, and Ladye Wilma, which started sm. late. Rainbow and Mavourneen did not start. Ariki soon look the lead, and maintained it throughout. though closely followed by Thelma and Ida. The course was completed in splendid time, the larger boats covering the distance in a little over two hours and three-quarters. The finishing times were: Ariki, 51). 33m. 455.; Thelma, sh. obiu. 305.: Ida. sh. 43m.; Moana. sh. 52in. 45-.: Ladye Wilma, 6h. lm. 25.-.: Ngatira. 6h. 3m. 125.; Mahaki, fall. 3m. 40s. : Aorere. fall. fam. 555. ; Rangatira, 6h. Bm. 55.; Freda, fall. 14m. 155.; Iris, 6h. 19m. 555. On time allowance Iris is first. Mahaki second, and Ida third. Motor Launch Handicap: Entries and han-dicap-Shadow, scratch: Ripple, 7m.: Tempest. 46m.; Geisha, 49jm. Tempest did not start. Geisha was sent away at 2.15 p.m.. Ripple at. p.m., and Shadow at, 3.4j. p.m. When off Whaiigaparaoa Shadow had the misfortune to break down, and did not finish. Geisha finished first, with Ripple close up. At the invitation of Mr. Farmer, Hie yachtsmen adjourned to the mansion house during the evening, and spent a most enjoyable time. MANUKAU YACHT CLUB. The M.anukau Yacht Club sailed off the third race of the season last Saturday, when there was a large attendance of spectators on the Onehunga Wharf. Additional interest was, lent to the proceedings by the club also providing prizes for a motor launch race. In the latter event, owing to the condition of the water, and several of the motors going wrong, only three launches started, out of nearly 20 expected. The following were the handicaps for tho sailing race:— Ngaroma, scratch; Make Made, scratch: Hilda. 22m.: Endeavour, 24m.; Spray, 24m.; Edna, 30m.; Clematis, 37m.; Mascotto, 38m.: Presto, 58m.: Amua, 40m.; Petrel. 48m.; Dispute, 48m.; Mana, 57m. Mr. Ernest. Sutherland acted as .-tarter and timekeeper, and despatched the yachts punctually to time. A strong south-westerly wind was blowing, and the boats had to beat down against, the tide. Amua, splendidly handled, seemed to sail best in the rough water, and was not long before assuming the lead, passing the half-way dolphin at 3h. 10m., followed by Endeavour, 3h. 22m. 305.; Spray, 3h. 24m. 305.: Hilda. 3h. 29m.; Ngaroma, 31). 53m. These were the only boats left in for the. second round. Amua continued to lead on the last round, and eventually won with over 7ni. to spare, from Endeavour, which defeated Spray by 10s. The. finishing times were; Amua, 4h. 2m. 455.; Endeavour, 4h. 10m.: Spray, 4h. 10m. 10s.; Ngaroma, 4h. 15m.: Hilda, 4h. 18m. 30s. The motor launch race saw the following start:—-Marama (H. Short), scratch: Manukau Maid (P. Farrell), scratch; Mildura, (W. Grundv), Bm. Mildura was sent an her wav at eight minutes to four p.m., and the scratch boats at four p.m. Marama quickly moved away from Manukau Moid, and overhauling Mildura led on turning tho mark buoy the first time round. On the scion.l round something went, wrong with Manukau Maid's engine, and she took no further nan in the race. Marama passed the finishing line at 51). 20m. 455., and Mildura at sh. 37m. Both the yacht and the launch race took place over the same course, and much interest was taken in the times recorded by the scratch vessels in each class. Ngaroma got over the distance in Hi- 15m., while the launch took lb. 20m. 45-. NORTH SHORE YACHT CLUB. The North Shore Yacht Club held its first cruising race on Saturday afternoon, the course being from starting line off eastern end of Victoria Wharf to Awaroa Bay, Waiheke, keeping outside Sandspifc buoy and beacon off Brown's Island, finishing between Look-out Point and mark boat moored to the eastward of the point. Fifteen knots. Owing to tho large entries, 28, the race was divided into two classes, the entries- and handicaps for Class 1. being: Wairiki, scr. ; Thistle. 2m. ; Speedwell. 2£m. ; Viola, s£m. ; Tore, him.: Emerald, 7in.; Encounter, 7m. Seagull. 9m.; Glady, 9im. ; Maru, 9im. ; Olympia, 9j.m.: Gloriana. 12m.: Rosina, 12m.; Kanio. 13m.; Waitangi, 13m.; Peri15m. The race was started at three p.m., Emerald, Speedwell, and Thistle being first away. All started but Rosina and Peri. There was a very fresh breeze from the south-west, and quick time was made to the bay, the finish being timed as follows: —Emerald. sh. 10m.; Wairiki. 51i. 10m. 305.; Thistle. 51). Urn. 50-.: Speedwell. sh. 12m. 45-.: Viola, sh. 14m.; Tee. 51). 15m.; Glady, 51). 15m. 305.: Seagull. 51). 16m.; Gloriana, sh. 16m. 5-.: .Olympia, 51). 17m. 30-.; Maru. 51). 22m. 50-.: Kamo, sh. 23m.; Waitaugi, sh. 23m. 5-. On time allowance Emerald takes first prize, Gloriana second prize. Glady third prize, and Seagull fourth prize. The entries and handicaps in the second class were: Wanderer, scr.: [Calm (barrel boat), scr.; Mermaid, 4m.; Essie, 4irn. ; Xiobe. : Minn, 7m.; .Merlin, 7im._; Eileen, Bm.; Rawhiti, 10m.; Vanora, 11m.; Nyaii/.a. 13m.; Lorina, 20m. The race started at a-quarter to three p.m., and all the entrants started. Rawhiti collided with the starter's boat owing to the very strong tide and tore her mainsail and lost her bowsprit, hut continued on under two reefs. Wanderer and Kahu got away first, all the others being close together hut Vanora, which was delayed about sin. by an accident to her gear. Wilkinson and Parker acted as starter and timekeepers, the finishes being timed, by Mr. J. Gordon, assisted by Mr. Murray. In the evening the boat-' crews to the number of 150 went, ashore by invitation of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon, when a very pleasant evening was spent in songs, vocal anil instrumental music, recitations, etc., the host and hostess with their usual liberality providing supper, for which the commodore returned thank-, cheers being given with great heartiness for Mr. and Mis. Gordon, the Misses Gordon, and Mr. J. Gordon. This was the most successful cruise held for some year,-, 31 boats taking part, in it. The club holds its annual picnic next Saturday.
