FIGHTING AMONG KANAKAS
WITCHCRAFT AND REVENGE
By Telegraph.—Press Association.-Copyright
Brishaxe, January 19. A (iK.vri.KMA.v connected with kanaka missions in the Islands, in an interview, slates that affairs in the Islands arc in a disturbed state, especially at Malazta. There is more lighting among the natives than there has been for some years. The contributing causes are witchcraft, which is widely practised, and the return of islanders. The compulsory return of many workers has revived old feuds and excited revenge. Unless the Government- take steps to protect them, the returned natives will be forced to the level of their more savage friends. The present is a very critical time, and it remains to be seen who gets the upper hand, the Government and the semi-civilis-ed natives, or the old natives. If. the latter succeed, many of the former will be slain, especially if the Government is slow in protecting them. Marly in the present month the warship Prometheus bombarded the village of Siniva.
