NINTH PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION. j £28 IN PRIZES. LARGEST PRIZE LIST OFFERED IN AUSTRALASIA. The proprietors of the Auckland Weekly News have much pleasure in announcing their Ninth Photographic. Prize Competition. These competitions are promoted with a view to encouraging photographers, both professional and amateur, to produce pictures suitable for journalistic workPhotography in New Zealand lias attained a high standard, and, favoured with unrivalled climatic conditions and an infinite variety of subjects, there is a wide scope and an excellent future for out-door photography. The Weekly News has arranged classes, into which the subjects for competition are. divided, to fairly represent the present, demands of illustrated journalism. In previous competitions the landscape and seascape pictures have been included in one class, but experience lias shown that in high-class photographs of dissimilar type? it. is hardly possible to make a fair comparison. It has therefore Ireen decided to encourage both branches individually and make two separate classes with liberal prizes attached to each. The competition is advertised early in oivler to give intending competitors the benefit of tho summer months during which to obtain subjects. The competition will remain open until April 30 next. The following are the. various- classes and the amounts of prizes offered : — I.—A NEW ZEALAND LANDSCAPE (with or without figure). First prize, £3 ; second prize, £1. 2.—A NEW ZEALAND SEASCAPE (with or without figure). First, prize, £3; second prize, £1. 3.—NEW ZEALAND FIGURE STUDY (European or Maori). First prize, £3; second prize, £1. FARM, STATION, OR BUSH LIFE SCENE- First prize, £3; second prize, £1. SPORTING, HUNTING, RACING, YACHTING. OR BOATING VIEW. First prize, £3 ; second prize, £1. 6—NEW ZEALAND COMIC STUDY. First prize, £2; second prize, £I'. 7.—BEST GENERAL COLLECTION OF NEW ZEALAND PHOTOGRAPHS. First prize, £4; second prize, £1. Exhibits under Class 7 can also be entered ill the various classes previously specified, the number of pictures entered by each exhibitor to total at least six. The prizes in Class 7 are open to all except those who win more than one first prize hi the other classes of the competition. CONDITIONS. No photograph previously published will be allowed to compete. The negatives must in all cases be the work of the competitor. Competitors should remember that small views, although allowed to compete, are not so suitable for reproduction as large ones. In awarding the prizes the suitability of ' the photograph for reproduction will bo taken into consideration- Bromide prints are not so suitable for reproduction as those on the ordinary p.o.p. paper. The proprietors will have the right to reproduce any photographs sent in for competition. Good typical pictures of general interest aro preferable to those of merely local interest. In sending in photographs prints should be sent flat, if possible. Particulars should be written on the back of the print in pencil, without in any way damaging it. All photographs must be. addressed to the "Competition Editor" of the Auckland Weekly News, and the class for which it is entered should be clearly marked both on the hack of the photograph as well as on the outside of the packet. Where a nom de plume is used it is advisable to also write the name of the competitor on the print.
