Hobakt, December 26.* The general "•.■manager of the Mt. Ly.ell mine has declined to accede to the request of the men for a further increase in the rates of pay.
[It was reported on December 17 that the wages of the men had been increased sixpence a day.]
ILLNESS OF DR. PATON
- ; Sydney, December 26. __ Dr. Paton, the veteran missionary, who is in his 83rd year, is seriously ill.
[Dr. Paton has been a missionary in the New Hebrides since 1858. Latterly he hits been in retirement in Melbourne, bu' up to very recently took a keen interest in the New Hebrides question.] ~-.;■"
