No branch of the poultry-rearing industry requires improvement more, than the breeding of geese. Whilst nearly all oilier kinds of poultry are being worked up by the introduction of suitable birds of pure blood. the breeders of geese to on in the old groove, and keep on with the same undersized and bad-shaped specimens that were kept in years -gone by. Another point which is neglected by keepers of geese is the fattening of them before sending thorn in lo market. A few practise this essential rule, and consequently, reap the benefit of a much-increased price. Although the cultivation of the apple has many drawbacks it is the most promising branch of agriculture in the United States of America. The fertility of some, of the fully-matured trees is 'remarkable. An observer in the Colorado apple districts states that lie has seen as many as 50 bushels of fruit gathered from one tree. The general average is a poor one against such a crop .".s this. In the Newtown growing districts 3s ami 4s a bushel are paid for the best apples. It is .said that in ten years' time the apple harvest of the United States will be doubled : nevertheless, the home consumption trebles itself, every three, years.
