A SITE FOR THE POST OFFICE.

i Sir,—Some days ago a correspondent in : your paper signing himself-" Civil Engineer" suggested, among other things, that the part of the railway reserve fronting Queen-street, J between lindean's Buildings and the Wa- [ verley Hotel, was a most suitable site for , a new post office. It has surprised ni-o that VOU did not RPO Kiiffirnnnf mnrif in tkid Kilcr.

gestion to urge its adoption. Certainly to i the ordinary citizen this site must seem an - ideal one, and I should liko to know if there is any yalict objection to its being selected. There is quite enough frontage there to allow of as largo a post office- as would be required and still retain two wide entrances from Queen-street to the railway station, one on either side of the proposed building, which would thus form a handsome, unattached block. When the erection of a new railway station conies to be undertaken it oould be built to the eastward of the present station, with a handsome front facing Queen-street, and approached by tho abovementioned roadways. At present the' ground I refer to is practically unused except to stow a few railway carriages, and if the above suggestion for a new station is feasible, 1 this Queen-street frontage -of tho reserve 1 should never be required by tho Railway 1 department. Surely,' therefore, tho Go- ' vernment need go no farther than this for a j site for our new post officeit will cost them • i nothing more than an Act.of Parliament to i acquire, and has every other qualification > that could be desired. We are told that the ' ' onlv difficulty in the way of their complying , with Auckland's just demand ,is a matter ; of site; is there, therefore, any reason why ■ our long-suffering citizens should not see 1 the foundation-stone of a building worthy of 1 our beautiful city laid on this spot before' many months have passed? Akabana. <
