A GREAT TANGI.
[BY TELEGRAPH.PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Monday. Waikanak's week of tangi over Wi Parata ended this afternoon. Maoris came from all parts of New Zealand, men, women, and children, of all ages, and the gathering is .said to he the greatest, ever recorded in the colony for native obsequies. The digging of the grave was- begun before ten o'clock this morning by half-a-dozen Maoris. The encampment comprised about. 50 tents, surrounding the one which sheltered the coffin. The sides of this tent were adorned with pictures, and nigs and mats were stacked on the ground. Around the bier the women in the tent maintained perpetually a lowmoaning, which increased in volume when visiting wartimes arrived and commenced' their pathetic wail.
