MEETINGS.

THE FROEBEL KINDERGARTEN. The Froebel Kindergarten was opened yesterday afternoon, when, on the invitation of the principal, Mrs. J. W. Kealy, a large number of ladies and gentlemen assembled at the institution in Beckham Place, Grafton Road. Mr. L. J. Bagnall (chairman of the Education Board) presided, and addresses were given by Mrs. Leo Myers and Mr. Milnes, M.A., principal of tho Auckland Training • College, and Rev. Gray Dixon. Mrs. Kealy gave a lucid exposition of the Froebel system. There was, she said, an impression abroad that kindergarten was just a pleasant way of amusing*children._ It j was far more. It was a character training. The child begins with things, and not with ideas. In other words, the ideas are suggested by the things, and not the things by the ideas. On the motion of. Mr- Leo Myers, who took occasion to say that he hoped tho | time was not far distant when a kindergarten would be part and parcel of every primary school, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the chairman. The Froebel materials were on exhibition, and were in-; spected with much interest by the guests. . Afternoon tea and music wound .up a most pleasant and instructive afternoon.

. CITY DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB. The annual meeting of the City DistrictCricket Club was held in tho Sports Club . last eveniug. There was a l ' fair , attendance. Dr. Bardie Neil was in the chair. The annual report stated that the senior team was bracketed at the head of the list with Parnell, Grafton, and North Shore. The first juniors did fairly well, but the third team did not do as well as was expected, while the fourth eleven had a successful season. The club had S three representatives in first-class cricket, in the persons'"of Messrs. Schmoll, Neill, and Hemus. Hemus headed the batting average with 40 per innings, while F. J. Cossoy was top of the bowling. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £4 lis 3d. The following officers were elected for tho ensuing year:—President, Mr. A. Myers; vice-presidents, Messrs. G. W. Newton, W. MaeCormiek, E. Davis, F. E. Baume, J. 11. Colwell, B. Myers; hon. secretary, Mr. H. D. Caro; treasurer, Mr. Richie; auditors, Messrs. S. Spencer and R. Magee; committee, Messrs. V. C. Kavanagh, L. G. Ilemus, E. MacCormictk, Hart-Brown, West, and Dr. Neil; Selection Committee, L. G. Ilemus. R. Magee, and Barr-Brown; delegates, Dr. Ilardie Neil, and Messrs. Cossev and R. Neil. Fifteen new members were elected. It was decided that the junior teams should appoint a Selection Committee. A motion was carried suggesting that- the City delegates support- the Eden Club's application that the senior matches be played there, provided the ground is in fit condition. It was decided that a deputation wait upon the Mayor of Auckland in reference to wickets on Victoria Park.
