Kawiiia, Monday. For some years an agitation lias been proceeding for the erection of a bridge across the Okupu.ta stream, but Oparau, a progressive settlement, had l to be content with a log. Whilst crossing the stream oil Saturday a man named Joseph Slater and in doing so .struck his head, and was st tinned. The river was flooded, amd the man was washed down, but two men Messrs. McChesney amd Forbes—gallantly jumped ill and rescued him in an exhausted stale.
