HOCKEY.

AUCKLAND V. THAMES. THE Auckland v. Thames match, played at Thames on Saturday, resulted in a win for Auckland by three goals to two, Barry, Porter, and Doyle scoring for Auckland. The ground was in very fair condition, but was slippery in places, and this considerably affected the play of the forwards. Auckland attacked immediately after the bully-off, and Porter shot a splendid goal. Auckland again attacked, and after a short time Barry put one into the net. The Aucklanders then took matters somewhat easy, and Thames began to attack, and towards the end of the second spell scored two goals in quick succession. The second spell was more even than the first. Auckland's goal was the result of a good piece of passing between Mather, Young, and Doyle, the latter player scoring. Towards the end play became very fast, and both sides did their utmost to score, but failed to. The final score was: Auckland, three goals; Thames, two goals.

For Auckland, Anderson played splendidly at fullback, always fielding the ball well, and feeding the forwards. AVhitely also played well, his hitting being very good. Porter was easily the best of the halves, •and did a tremendous amount of work. His hitting was excellent, as also was his tackling. The goal which he scored beat five or six men. The forwards did not play particularly well, due to their not having played together before, and none of them shone out. All of the Thames backs played safely, but one or two of their forwards were inclined to play roughly. With a little coaching the' Thames team would take a lot of beating. i

FINAL FOR LADIES' CHAMPIONSHIP. (Kopana, 3 goals, v. Moaua, 1 goal.)

The final for the ladies' championship was played at Remuera on Saturday, and, despite the unfavourable weather conditions. was witnessed by a very large number of spectators. The game was of a most interesting order, and some fine hockey was. shown. From the bully Kopana gained possession, and made a strong attack on Moana, till Miss Maciiidoe, passing to Miss Wynyard. the latter sent the ball to Miss Prime, and the Moana forwards set a strong attack, but Miss AVatkin relieved. Play remained in midfield. A free-hit to Kopana gained much ground, till Miss Alison passed to Miss Cooke, and the Moana right-wing, dribbling well down the field, centred. The forwards rushed the ball into the circle, Misfl Prime scoring for Moana. The score aroused Kopana, and, chiefly through the efforts of Misses Taylor and Scott, Moan.a were defending hard. Relief was brought by Mirs Wynyard, who sent the ball out to Miss Corry, and another fine passing run by the green-and-blues ended in the ball just going outside the posts. Kopana gained possession from the bully, and Miss Taylor took the ball to Moana' circle, and just on half-time Miss Scott scored. With the scores even, and ground and wind in their favour, everything pointed to Moana having the best of the second spell, but their efforts in the first spell had proved too much, and Kopana. playing with great dash and combination, kept the green-and-blues mostly on the defensive. Another rush, started by Miss Taylor, ended in Hiss Dobbie scoring. Play now remained between the 25's. and Mist Prime led an attack on Kopana. and a hard shot struck the post and rolled outside the nets, to the delight, of Kopana. From a shot by Miss Watkin. Miss Mainland passed to Miss Taylor, and again Kopana's left-wing, dribbling well up the field, centred, and Miss Scott, with a. very hot shot, which Moana's goalkeeper made a. fine attempt to stop, added the third goal for the blues, and the whistle sounded with Moana attacking. Kopana won by three goals to one, and arc the champion lady team for the season.
