LAWN TENNIS.
Of the players nominated by the provincial associations for the New Zealand representative team to play against the Australian States in Christchurch about New Year time, the New Zealand .Association has selooted tho following twelve men and eight ladies to go into active training (says " Volley") Messfs. C. C. Cox, F. M. B. Fisher, H. M. Gore, F. Laishley, H. A. Parke.?, and R. N. Y. Swanston (Wellington), A. E. Wilding and W. H. Kiver (Canterbury), J. C. Peacock (Auckland), C. J. Dickie and A. G. Wallace (Taranaki), and G. G. White (Otago), Misses Gore, Nunnelley, Travors, and A. Ward (Wellington), Powdrel! (Taranaki), Campbell (Otago),, Nicholson (Canterbury), and Udy (Auckland). Although official advices have been received to the effect that an English team will not visit the colonies this year, there is said to be some hope yet that one or both of the famous Doherty brothers may take part in the big tournament to be held at Christchurch, as they may come privatelv to the colony. Neither '* R.F." nor "H.L." has been in the best of health lately, and the. strain of playing under climatic conditions prevailing in Australia during the summer time may have influenced thorn in 'refusing; to make the trip officially, but there is still a chance that they may visit New Zealand. , The tournament, Christcmas, with the> best Australian talent taking part, will undoubtedly attract large attendances, but it is not too late to open up negotiations with Ward and Wright, the American pair (savs "Volley").' With their great reputation as players and their unorthodox methods of play, they would be an attraction to the tournament that would make it an unqualified success. If anything is to be done in; the matter it should be taken in hand at once, for the- chance of seeing the Doherty brothers lis :: now only a remote pos- ( sibility - .'
