Berlin, July 18. Charlemagne's sarcophagus in the cathedral at Aix-la-Chapelle, has been opened under orders from the Government of Germany for the purpose of vestments known to be within it being inspected and photographed.
These vestments, two in number, and both of great artistic and historical value, were removed and sent, to Berlin, and afterwards replaced.
The Emperor Charlemange was buried at Aix-ln-Chapelle in 814, the spot lioing marked with a stone. In 796. he had built an imperial palace there and the chapel which forms the nucleus of the cathedral. It, is supposed that- lie was born there in 742. for the removal of the vestments the Kaiser must have given his sanction, and it may have been done at his instance. •
