ALLEGED THEFT OF BOOKS. AT the Police Court yesterday, before Messrs. W. Thompson and E. F. lizard, J sP.. a well-dressed man named John Michael Steele was barged with having stolen four books, valued at £1, the pro-, perty of Upton and Co. Sergeant Hendry, who prosecuted, applied for a remand for eight days.. Accused, raising no objections, the remand was granted. Bail was allowed, [ accused in £25 and one surety of a like sum. Accused was convicted and ordered to be imprisoned until tho rising of the Court. ALLEGED THEFT OF A CORNET. A young man named Fred.' Buttock,* who had been arrested on a warrant at, Waihi, was charged with having stolen a cornet, the property of the Salvation Army. Chief-. Detective Marsaek prosecuted, and applied ■for a remand until to-day, which was granted. DRUNKENNESS. Two first offenders were each convicted ana ordered to pay 2s 6d cab hire, and to be imprisoned till tin* rising of tho Court, for drunkenness. William Mitchell, a man with a long list of convictions, asked to be leniently dealt with when charged with drunkenness. The Bench decided to give him another chance, but. he would have to pay cab hire, 2s 6d, and would be imprisoned til! the rising' of the Court.
