The Customs returns for the month of May were completed yesterday. The following is a comparison with the corresponding period of last year: — Customs duties, 1905. £50.091 lis 2d: 19G6, £46,583 5s 7d; beer duty. 1905, £1724 2s sd; 1936, £1806 63 Bd. Exports.—Gold: 1905. 23.1780z 13dwt, value £94.324; 1906. 31.2280z ldwt 19gr. value £127,335. Silver: 1905. 170,1480z 4dwt, value £18,194;' 1906, 190,48507. 3dwt, value £19,589. Butter: 1905, 354evrt, value £1774; ISO 6. 425icwt, value £1956 Cheese: 1905. 163cwt. value £333; 1906, 367*cwt. value £899. Oats: 1906. 324 bushels, value £41; 1906. 603 bushels, value £73. Wheat: 1905.138 bushels, value £24; 1906, 182 bushels, value £35. Potatoes: 1905, 19 tons, value £171; 1905, 22} tone value £282. Grains not otherwise enumerated: 1906. 157 bushels, value £67. Th* Customs duties show a falling-off of £3509, when compared with May, 1905, due to various 'causes, among them being duty paid on goods intended for Auckland, but landed at Southern ports, also a tendency to economise in the use of imported articles, a. good deal of money being invested in mining and in land. There' is, however, the substantial increase of £38,263 :in . the \ value of ' exports, and the chief item in which the increase 13 to be | noted is flax, an increase of £6463. The beer duty ebows 'an increase of £82. The increase in the export of gold compared with May last year is £33,011, and in silver £1395. '
