[BY TELEGRAPH.-—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Whangarei, Saturday. The proposal of the district school teachers to establish an amateur athletic association for the public schools in this neighbourhood has now been carried into effect, and ■ th* following officials have been appointed: — Patron, Mr. F. blander, M.11.R. ; president,' Mr. F. Foot secretary and treasurer, Mr. W. JolF; assistant-secretary, Mr. H. Crawford; committee, Messrs. H. R. McKenzie, F. Higginson, A. Rust, H. Stewart, W. O. Lamb, G. Pocock, F. Walker, F. W. Kysh, J. Teasdale, W. Blow, 0. Waddell, E. Millington, and other head teachers of schools. A large number of ladies and gentlemen attended the ball promoted by the mounted' volunteer troop at. Matangata last night, about 20 journeying from Whangarei by brake. The ball programme contained 24 dances. Songs were contributed' during the evening by Miss Sutherland and Messrs. Hoi-spool, Luke, Webb, and Paulson. Miss Moffett was graceful and olerer in the sword dance, and a recitation by Mr. C. G. Moor* met with much appreciation. The music was in the hands of Messrs. E. Heape (piano) and F. Cheeseman (violin). Captain Steadman was in command of the inspection parade of the Whangarei Rifle Volunteers last night, with Lieutenants Dee and Pearce assisting. Two half-corn-panies were formed and instructed in the charging' and uncharging of magazines and in muskerty exercise by Lieutenant Pearce and Sergeant-Major Chcator. The Assessment Court will sit at the Whangarei Courthouse on Tucsdav, May 15. Messrs. .1. D. McKeiizie and T. Wakeliu are the local assessor*.
