DEVONPORT BOROUGH COUNCIL. A MEETING of the Devonport Borough Council was held last night, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr. E. W. Alison. M.H.11.). and Messes. Robert Logan, jtui., C. C. Dacre. C. P. Murdoch. E. J. Osborne, W. D- McLean. E. G. Ford, and W. U. Timewell. Municipal Association's Conference: The Mayor was appointed to represent the Council at the biennial conference of delegates to the Municipal Association of New Zealand, to be held at Wellington in July next. Matters affecting the interests of municipalities will be discussed. . Borough Engineer: The Streets and Works Committee recommended "That if the services of an engineer, who is well experienced in road-making, can be secured at a remuneration not exceeding five per cent, on the actual cost of the works, an engineer be appointed to lay out anil supervise the construction of such road and other works to lie carried out within the borough as the Council may from time to time determine." The . recommendation was adopted. Waterworks Loan Surplus: At. the conclusion of the ordinary meeting a special meetI ins wag held to confirm the following; resolution, passed at a meeting held on March 27: [ "That out of the surplus from the waterworks loan account, raised on September 21, 1904. the sum of £525 be appropriated to com- . plete the purchase of the land at Lake Takapuua agreed to be purchased from Mr. Shakespeare for waterworks purposes; that the balance of such snrplus he transferred to the district fund account, and used as follows: ting down Spraggon's corner. The first quarterly meeting of the Auck--5 land Methodist Mission was held in the Helping Hand Hall. The Iter. 15. F. Ilothwell j presided, and v.as supported by the Rev. L .1. Wilson and a large number of officials. The chairman, in welcoming those present, r " pointed out that missions in large cities ' were playing an important part in the work - of the Metho.dist Church. There were 41 misr sions in the Old Country, wine of them } having a constituency of 16,000 people. Over a million of money had been spent in prej. mises. In Melbourne and Sydney the mis- ' sions were a huge success. Dunedin had a 5 splendid mission, and as things had been ® developing Auckland would lie well up with f the leading centres in a few years. Waihi. 's Y.M.C.A. J Further meetings were held at the Y.M.C.A. s rooms yesterday in connection with the misr siori of Mr. D A. Budge, of Montreal. In the evening an illustrated lecture '• on Canada was given by Mr. Budge. Dr. e Knight being in the chair.
