Y.M.C.A. SWIMMING CLUB.

A SUCCESSFUL CARNIVAL,

The initial carnival of til© Y.M.C.A. Swimming Club was held in the Albert-street baths last night. There was a good attendance, and the greatest interest was taken in the sport. The races were got off fairly well to time, and the greatest credit is due io the secretary (Mr. W. V. Nutt), on whom the bulk of the work fell. The baths were in excellent condition, and reflect credit on the caretaker (Mr. Farquhar). The races were well contested, but the limit .men were treated a little too lightly. Notwithstanding this the finishes were very close, and further carnivals will show much improvement. Among the events was a ladies' race, in which three started. Much enthusiasm was shown, and further races for ladies arc assured. Mr. •M. Champion, the I time Auckland crack, made an attempt to break the 100 yds record for New Zealand. He covered the distance in 665., which is only Is. outside the record—a good performance, considering that Champion had no pacer. The officials, who carried out their duties well, were as follows: Judges, Messrs. A. N. Macaulay and J. G. Mitchell; timekeeper, Air. R. Bell; starter, Mr. H. O'Hare; call stewards, Messrs. Cu lie more and H. .Tames; result board steward, Mr. G. Cummins; costume steward, Mr. W. Costa

50yds Open Handicap.—First heat: F. Tomlinson, 35., 1; S. Kean, Is., 2. A close finish. Time, 30s. Second heat: J. Lakey, 25., 1; J. Easdaie. 65.. 2. Won on the post. Time, 32 5-ss. Third heat: .T. Kean, 'is.. 1; B. I>lakey, 25., 2. Won easily. Time, 32 3-ss. Fourth heat: J. Gibbons, 45.. 1; B. Johnson, 35., 2. A good race. Won. by a touch. Time, 33 2-ss. Final: J Kean, 1; S. Kean, 2. A good race. Won by a length. Time, 32 4-ss. J. Gibbons finished first, but was disqualified for leaving the mark before his time.

Schoolboys' Race. 50yds.—F. Foster. 25., 1; W. Booth, 55.. 2. The winner led all the way, ami won with ease. Time, 365.

100 yds Ladies'Bracelet.—First heat: F. Fish, 75., 1; F. Ban-aft. 4s-, 2. After an exciting' race the winner won with very little to spare. Time. 7us. Second heat: D. Neven, scr.. 1; J. Carnahau. &s.. 2. A good and well-contested race. Won on the post. Time, 75 4-£». Tnird heat: J. Kean, Bs.. 1; F. Kernot, 45., 2. G. Havord (scr.) collided with Keirnot, otherwise he would have been placeld. Time. 74 4-ss. Fourth heat: W. Gibbons (bci\) was the only competitor to finish, Harrison (45.), retiring at 72yds. Time, 75 4-ss. Final: J. Kean. 1; Fish, 2. This was the most exciting and closely-contested race of the evening. The scratch men (Neven and Gibbons) swam a hard race. Time, 775.
