BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary meeting of the Auckland Education Board was held yesterday, being attended by the chairman (Mr. .S. Luke) and Messrs. A. R. Harris, G. L. Peacocke, R. McKenzie, G. Edgecumbe, J. Stallworthv, and H. J. Greenslade.

Vacancies: The chairman reported that the following resignations had been received since last meeting:—Miss E. E. Herrich, assistant, Mercury Bay, and Miss L. M. Bree, teacher, Whangamarino. It was decided to invite applications by advertisement. for the following appointments: — Chapel-street, female, assistant, at £115 per annum; Ngartiawahia, female assistant, at £105; Ramarama, female assistant, at £85; and Devonport, female assistant, in charge of infant department, at £180. It was decided to inform the Onehunga School Committee, in answer to their inquiry, that the appointment of second assistant : master was made in strict accordance with the requirements of the Act, and that the Board exercised its lawful discretion in appointing one of the two candidates selected by them. Finance: The .following accounts were passed for payment: Administration account, 11 vouchers, £421 Is 3d; manual and technical account, 15 vouchers, £462 16s 7d : building fund account, 24 vouchers, £920 15s 3d. The bank balances on January 31 were reported as follows:—Administration account (credit), £12,888 19s 6d ; bui! ings account (debit), £6522 2s lid; and manual and training account (debit), £3473 5s 2d. A letter was read from the Education Department stating that the ordinary building grant of £11,446 had been allocated. Of this £7500 had been paid, and the remainder would be remitted as soon as possible. The Board, being of opinion that, the amount allocated is insufficient, decided to telegraph to the Department asking that it be increased.

Extra Expenditure on Contracts; On the recommendation of the Finance Committee it was decided to give Mr. Mitchell, the Board's architect, authority to incur extra expenditure to the extent of 5 per cent, of the contract price up to £25 in any contract under his supervision involving alterations to- existing buildings. The Normal School and Training College: The Finance Committee recommended—(l) that the rooms in the normal school be forthwith calsoinined as suggested by the principal; (2) that a strong representation be made to the Minister for Education urging immediate action towards the erection of a suitable building; and (3) that, pending the opening of the training college, Mr. Milnes should visit some of the town and suburb? u schools. 'J'he recommendations were adopted. Tho Technical School: The director of technical education, Mr. George George, repotted that the technical school exhibition held recently was most successful, the exhibits being better and the attendances largei than on former occasions. He suggested that the school should be represented at the Christchurch Exhibition, and was given authority to make the necessary arrangements. The average attendance at the recent summer school was 150. The capitation thus earned amounted to £80, which compared very favourably with the working expenses, which only amounted to £35. At his suggestion it was decided to vote £7 7s to Mr. Coekburn to cover his extra expenses in connection with the summer school; £3 3s was also voted to Mi. Wallace. Mr. K. 11. Patterson was appointed instructor in commercial geography and commercial correspondence at the. technical school, vice the Rev. J. King Davis, resigned.
