DEATH OF AN OLD COLONIST.
[BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT. Wellington, Wednesday. The death occurred this morning of Mr. William McGill, monumental mason, a very old resident of Wellington. Deceased' was born in London in 1844, and arrived in Australia in the early fifties, having been attracted thither by the gold rush. He subsequently went to Otago, but after a while he went on to South Canterbury, where as a contractor he carried out many important public works in Timaru and its vicinity. Later on he successfully carried out the first contract for the Napier breakwater. He was resident in Wellington for the last 17 years, and he took an active interest in municipal matters, having represented Te Aro Ward in the City Council for six years. He has twice visited the Old Country, but since his return from his last trip his health has been failing him. He leaves a widow and a family of nine—three daughters and six sons.
