SPORTING.

If the pronounced cases of in and out running which characterised the fir.-t two days' racing of the Takapuna Jockey Club's Summer Meeting be excepted, it may bo said that the North Shore gathering pa; : off with a good measure of success. Considering, however, that the fields kept up well throughout the three days, and that there was a splendid attendance on each occasion, an increase rather than a decrease might have been expected in the- matter of totalizator receipts:. However, a shrinkage of several hundreds has to be reported, compared with last year, and the record of 1902, which is nearly £6000 in advance of the sum handled this year, is likely to stand for some time to come. The 'following is thetotalisator statement in connection with lakapuna summer meetings for the pa.st five years: — 1902 ■ £30.835 1903 25.092 1904 25,101 1905 23,406 1906 25,050: Representatives of 14 different sires scored winning honours at the Takapuna Jockey Club's recent summer meeting. The descendants of Leolantis came out at, the bead of the list with four successses. Seaton Delaval, Castor, and Soult were level lor second honours with three winners respectively to their credit, while Cyrenian claimed two winners. The other sires represented on the winning list were Freedom, I'hcubus Apollo, The Workman, Sabretache, Tasman, St. Leger, Lebel, Nestor, and Eton, each claiming one successful representative.

The reason of the non-appearance of Scotty's name in the list of entrants for the Wanganui Cup is explained by the fact that the letter posted at Auckland on the 2'itli alt., containing his nomination, did not reach the secretary of the Wangaiyii Jockey Club until after the date of closing. The letter, of course, was-posted in ample- time, and under ordinary circumstances would have been delivered in Wanganui with several hours to spare. However, tho extraordinary had not been taken into account, and the mail missing both trains at New Plymouth, Scotty's nomination was still on the train when it should have- been in Wanganui.

Amongst the trainers with representatives running at the Takapuna meeting, C. Weal secured first place with four wins, his successful representatives being Conductor, Polycaste, Takaro, and Gladstone. R. Hannon furnished a double, winner with Sol, and Miss Winnie scored a single for him. R. Hall landed a double with Khama, R. McMiken had a like record with Le Beau, and K. Heaton scored with Baltimore and Noteorini. The other trainers represented on the winning list were:—Hughes (Bullv), P. Conway (Primo), D. Morraghan (Master Delaval), F. Macman-emin (Scottv), J. B. Williamson (Engraver), W. Smith (Luresome), C. Coleman (Discoverer), J. Thorpe (Forth), J. Gainsford (Misere), W. Tozcr (Frederick), Mr. W. Ring (Certainty).

Mr. Chadwick nearly succeeded in having a treble dead-heat associated with his work at. the Takapuna Jockey Club's .Summer Meeting. In the decision of the Devoriport Handicap Noteorini, Lucrece, and Miss Winnie came home from the distance locked together, and as the trio dashed past the post they were only separated by a nose in each case. This finish between Noteorini, Lucrece, and Miss Winnie was worth going a long way to witness, and the display of the jockeys as well as their steeds was up to a good standard.

Honours were well distributed amongst the horsemen competing at the Takapuna Summer Meeting, no less than 16 securing a place on the winning list. H. Cray came out in the leading position, Primo, Luresome, and Certainty respectively scoring in his hands. C. Cress" steered Conductor and Gladstone to victory; B. Deeley got home first on Discoverer and Misere; M. Ryan steered Scotty and Noteorini home in front; and A. Erickson scored on Miss Winnie and Frederick. W. Wilson scored twice on Sol, while K. Hall was responsible for a like feat on Khama. The other horsemen to have their names included on the winning list were:— Kelly (Bullv), E. Brown (Master Delaval), B. Towers (Engraver), P. Brady (Baltimore), J. McGregor (Le Beau), J. Scents (Forth). J. Sparkes (Polycaste), A. Parramore (Takaro), J. Junker (Lo Beau).

Khama answered the second demand made' upon him at the Takapuna meeting in a manner even more convincing than when he registered his first success at Bevonport on the 27th tilt., and that too in the face of Mr. Chadwick raising his impost to list 51b. The sou of Castor carries a couple of suspicious-looking legs; but he walked away all right after bis second race, and he may last over the autumn meetings. Khama is engaged at the Egmont meeting, which opens on Wednesday next, and in the Whareroa Hurdle Race ho figures second fop weight, with lOst 121b. or 111b below Waiwera, who figures at the head of the list.

The latest legislation of the Tasmanian Racing Club is to th© effect that jockeys who have suffered on account of foul riding without lodging a complaint will be held equally culpable with the wrongdoers.

The Frenchman having won several times over hurdles up country of late, his party were tempted to bring him down to contest the Waiwera Hurdle Race at Takapuna on the third day. The Crawford Priory gelding was not able to pace it. with Khama and Co., and he finished last.

It is a popular opinion thai, Miss Winnie had bad luck to lose the Devonport Handicap. The daughter of Tasman lost some ground racing round the bottom turn.

The stallion Explosion (by Cuirassier— Jadestonc) has been purchased from Messrs. L. D. Nathan and Co. by Mr. Alfred Walker, of Feilding.

The Soult gelding Sol has the record of winning on each occasion that he contested a, cross-country event. Geordie looked to be in racing condition when pulled out, at the Takapuna meeting, but he was never dangerous on either day. INTERREDVI GOSSIP. [CT TELECKAPH.—OWN COKKESPOXDEXTS.] CANTERBURY. ■• Tuesday. The Canterbury Jockey Club's Summer Meeting will occupy attention un Thursday and Saturday. This is never a very exciting fixture, being more like a quiet country meeting than a metropolitan gathering. For this wecik's meeting there are a few visitors from South Canterbury and North Otago. but otherwise it will be confined to local horses. Acceptances for the minor handicaps are not available yet, but the following horses may be expected to run well:Hornby Welter Handicap: Boscastle. Filly Stakes: Cross Battery. Midsummer Handicap: Convoy. Lyttelton Plate: Mythical. Craven Plate: Master Alix. Halswell Welter Handicap: Leeside. On the second day Iso It or Cuneiform should have no difficulty in winning the Middle Park Plate fur Mr. Stead.

Tirole and Chivalry have been suffering from severe colds since their return from Wellington, and they have not teen on the tracks for several days, so that they arc not likely to be scon out this week. This is bad luck for their connections, as they were very well, and their chances of winning at the meeting were bright. F. D. Jones, who was for a long time associated with the Yaldhurst stable, has received cable advice of an appointment in England at a retainer of £500 a year, and will leave for the Old Country shortly. It is not known who he is going to ride for, though Noctuiform's new owner, Mr. Buchanan, has been mentioned. A rumour is current, though so far it lacks confirmation, to the effect that H. Franks, who went home with Xoctuiform, has been engaged by that horse's owner as trainer.

Some Southern backers have been operating with such remarkable success on Auckland pony races that the layers contemplate stopping business on these races. For the same reason they are also thinking of cutting off the Takapuna and Avondale meetings. Makaroff is galloping very well just now, and his track work suggests that he may win again shortly. Aynsley has Mythical, The Mohican, and Stepdancer in fine trim, and they should be worth watching for events just ahead. Nothing is galloping letter at present than Chryseis, who has only to reproduce her track form to win a decent race in the near future.

_Martian is bowling along in tine style in view of Wanganui engagements. On Saturday he reeled off six furlong- in lm. 15 4-ss. Kirriemuir, the crack two-year-old. made her reappearance on the course on Friday, but so far she has been restricted to walking exercise.

Beau Beaton, who is now a member of J. Franks' team, is doing steady work. Hr is carrying a lot of condition at present.

WELLINGTON. Tuesday. The. boxes in A. Shearsbys' Levin stables «r." at present fully occupied, the latest additions to the Horowhenua string being the Hon. W. W. Johnston's team (Flamen, Aorangi, and Moscow), formerly trained at Porirua. C. Jenkins had some engagements at the Paliiatua- meeting, hut was unable to fulfil them .in consequence of being shot in the foot by a pea-rifle the day before the meeting. After the Nelson meeting First, View was sold to the owner of Sandy for £60. Mr. Solomon took the gelding South with him. H. Fletcher brought back from Nelson a four-year-old untried gelding (by Merrie England—Curenagh). The horse was taken 10 the Pahiatua meeting, and broke down the day before the race.-. A. Hall, the Feilding trainer, lias recently been laid up, suffering from inflammation of the stomach. WANGANUI. Tuesday. Both Firelight and Hokto, trained here, will compete at the Karioi meeting on the Bth inst. Neither of the pair look in racing condition, but it doesn't need a Carbine to win at this gathering. Latest advices re W. Fahey, who met with an accident at Foxton, are to the effect that there is no material difference in his condition. Kuroki, who has proved himself a useful horse on the flat, i,- now being exercised over the small sticks, with a view to future engagements in the winter months. The Fisko gelding can jump, and should pay his way at. the illegitimate game. I understand, however, that he will run his flat engagements out. It is rumoured here that a meeting of horseowners in the Wellington district is to be held with a view of squelching the alleged jockeys' ring. Mr. G. (1. Stead evidently intends being represented at the Wanganui Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting, as boxes have been engaged for Nightfall, Savoury, anil Delaware. NAPIER. Tuesday. The Napier Park Racing Club are going to use Saywell's starting machine at their autumn meeting, and the necessary posts, etc., are being placed in position for the working of the gate. P. Johnston has taken up his quarters as private trainer to Mr, G. P. Donnelly. MATAMATA HACK PACING CLUB'S MEETING.
