SWIMMING.
Since the holidays swimmers have not evinced much enthusiasm in the sport, and the attendances at the baths, considering the favourable weather, have not been at all good. The newly-formed Y.M.C.A. club, of which Mr.. W. V. Nutt has been elected .secretary, is showing a great amount of enthusiasm, which it 'is hoped will be maintained until the end of the season. This club have now about 100 members, and have had good attendances at their two club swims held this year. Next Tuesday a 50yds club race will be held at the Albert street baths, and it is proposed to hold a carnival in March. The Auckland Club have b*en taking matters quietly so far this year, but thsy will shortly again be holding races. A second carnival this year might also be considered. , The New Zealand championships this year are to be held in Nelson, commencing on February 2. A carnival week is being held at Nelson at the time. Auckland will be well represented in the championship and handicap events. R. Bell (Y.M.C.A.) will Set? in the 100 yds, 220 yds and 440 yds championships, and F. Kernot (Auckland) will contest the 220 yds and 440 yds, while these two, with S. Kean and F. Tomlinson, of the Auckland Club, will compete in the handicaps. The trio have also entered for the relay race. They will leave Onehunga on Sunday afternoon. • At a recent meeting of the New Zealand Swimming Association a discussion took place concerning the humane branch of the association. Mr. H. Frost, the centres delegate to the Humane Council of the New Zealand Swimming Association, wrote from Auckland, stating that it was impossible to get a meeting of the .Other centres had not appointed their representatives, and until he appointments were made the wish of the centres, that the council should be removed from Auckland, could not be carried into effect. It was agreed that the secretary should he a-10-d to write, to the centres, impressing on them the necessity of appointing repreaenta- " eS S Hilton has been chosen to represent Canterbury"" at the Nelson championships.
