MR. WALTER LONG.

OPPOSED BY THE DEVOLUTIONISTS. London', January 25. The Devolution party in Dublin is making a strong fight against the return of Mr. Walter Long for Dublin South. The leader of the party (Lord Dunraven) denies that Mr. Long is the mouthpiece of the Irish Unionists, and condemns him as the exponent of a mischievous reactionary policy. Mr. Long was defeated for Bristol West, the seat so long held by Sir Michael HicksBeach. He is making a second attempt at Dublin. ELECTION NOTES. London. January 25. Mr. Lief Jones, the successful Liberal candidate for the Appleby Division of Westmoreland, was opposed by Lord Kerry, son of Lord Lansdowne. Mr. Jones' majority was only three. Mr. Devlin and Mr. McHugh, Nationalists, have each been returned for two places. The three successful Liberal candidates named Phillips are sons of the aged Prebendary of Salisbury Cathedral. . A SEAT FOR MR. BALFOUR. (Received January 26, 9.37 p.m.) London, January 26. The Hon. Alban Gibbs, member for London City, has offered to resign his seat in favour of Mr. Balfour, who, on public grounds, has gratefully accepted. It is not likely that Mr. Balfour will be opposed. Mr. Gibbs is the eldest son of Lord Aldenham. He has been one of the two members for London City since 1902.
