THE FAMINE IN JAPAN.
HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE DYING. By Telegraph—Press Association Copyright. (Received January 24, 11.10 p.m.) Tokio, January 24. The sufferings of the people in the famine-stricken districts of Japan continue. Hundreds of people have died of cold and hunger. In July of last year it was reported that owing to an unfavourable season the rice crops in the Fukushima, Iwate, and other districts, were expected to prove a total failure, and that a million people were faced with .starvation. Early in November it was reported that famine conditions existed, and that the people were collecting roots, grinding them, and making cakes of the meal, and many had sold their children as servants. Proposals to send relief were made in England and the colonies, but oil November 21 it was officially announced in Tokio that the distress was not so severe as to necessitate outside help. Then on December 31 it was reported that 670,000 people were living under famine conditions.
