EDUCATION BOARD FINANCE.
An estimate of the receipts and expenditure of the Auckland Education Board for the year 1906 was submitted by the secretary (Mr. Vincent E. Rice) at the meeting of the Board yesterday. The income for the year was estimated at £173,000. The estimated expenditure (£172,875) was made up as follows:—Office staff and clerical assistance, £1800; inspectors' salaries and travelling:, £3500; departmental expenses, £1300; teachers' salaries, £103,500; teachers' house allowances, £4000; relieving teachers, £700; district high schools, £2600; maintenance of scholarships, £2100; incidental expenses of schools, £9000; truant officer, £225; pupil-teachers' classes, £150; maintenance of training college, £3000; school buildings, £30,000; and manual and technical instruction, £6000.
The secretary pointed out that according to the revised scale the teachers' salaries this year had gone up from £96,000 in 1905 to £108,000 in 1906, an increase of £12,000. "Bleeding country," observed Mr. Parr.
