THE GOLDFIELDs.

| WAIOTAHI. i - — ' l i ENCOURAGING DEVELOPMENTS AT i NOS. 4 AND 5 LEVELS. ! I Thk secretary of the Waiotahi Gold ! Mining Company (Mr. G. S. Killing) returned from a visit of inspection to the j mine on Friday night. Seen on Saturday, I Mr. Kissling stated that the manager is of J opinion that the ore body recently disI covered in the Mary Ann section, at No. j 4 level, is not identical with the reef (No. j 5 reef) cut at the No. 6 level, coming in j from the Kuranui-Caledonian crosscut, and j that he expects to intersect the No. 5 reef some 30ft. or 40ft further on in the drive I being put in to connect with the Mary j Ann shaft. In addition to this developj ment, the operations at Nos. 4 and 5 le- ! vels, going eastward, are regarded as exj tremely promising, as payable ore is being | obtained from both faces at these levels and there appears every prospect of the I reef continuing its present firm formation. If these expectations are realised, a large ! block of unexplored country, carrying good crushing dirt, remains to be opened up at the eastern end of the mine, a matter of I great importance as far as the future of I the property is concerned.

The manager of the New May Queen mine reports as follows:Squaring-up a,nd limbering the drive from the crosscut to the winze has been completed, and a leading slope is now being carried along over this drive. The quartz broken from here has shown good dabs of gold, while about 31b of picked stone have also been selected. Driving on the lode eastward of the winze ■aid towards the junction of the north-west lode is also in progress, and there are about 6ft of the lode stripped. The drive westward from the crosscut is now in about 20ft; the lode here is looking very promising, and showed good dabs of gold when last broken down. There are now about Bft of the lode stripped. We have about 20 loads of quartz in the hopper.'
